What is an Emergency Dentist?

An emergency dentist is a dentist with special skills and tools to treat dental emergencies. Emergency dentists put an end to dental pain and take measures to stop the problem from getting worse until the patient can get long-term dental treatment if needed. 

Who Needs Emergency Dentistry?

Dental accidents can happen to anyone. Some dental injuries need immediate treatment while others can wait for a scheduled trip to the dentist. Injuries such as cracked, broken or knocked out teeth require emergency care while, depending on the severity and location, a chipped tooth or minor crack can wait. Severe cracks, missing pieces and nerve damage require immediate attention. Someone with serious abscess, swelling and pain needs care right away.

What Should Someone do in Case of a Dental Emergency?

As soon as a dental injury occurs, the patient should contact his regular dentist to find out if the clinic offers emergency dentistry services or call an emergency dentist. A patient with a chipped, broken or cracked tooth should rinse his mouth with warm water then hold a cold compress to his face. If the patient suffered a broken tooth, he should bring the fragment wrapped in a piece of wet gauze or wet towel. A patient may sometimes be able to reinsert a knocked out tooth back into its socket. If reinsertion is not possible, the patient should hold the tooth under his tongue and go to an emergency dentist immediately.
